Stand on one of the lower steps with your back to the wall, and look up.

The large dark red tube running left to right is the windshaft.

The windshaft carries the sails, outside the mill to the left.

The large wooden wheel with the white band is the brakewheel, the white piece is the brake band which is pulled tight to hold the sails stationary when the mill is not in use.

The brake wheel drives the green horizontal wheel which is called the wallower.

This drives the blue vertical shaft, taking power to the large yellow great spur wheel which is in front of you.

The yellow parts which you see comprise the winding gear, which turns the cap to keep the sails into wind. They are driven from the fantail which is outside on the far right.

The power from the fantail is taken by the yellow shafts to the gear immediately above your head where it engages the curb.

The curb is the red painted rack gear which is around the top of the tower.
